Saint John the Baptist is here depicted in a desolate landscape, his eyes on the lamb at bottom right. The Bible describes John’s baptism of Jesus, who by demonstrating his submission to divine will prompted John later to refer to him as the “Lamb of God.” The lamb in the painting therefore became the saint’s common attribute. |  |
