The open triptych reveals the adoration of the Christ child by the three kings Caspar, Balthasar, and Melchior, who had traveled far to pay their respects and offer gifts. The Antichrist is also present in the guise of a fourth king: seminaked and with an odd headpiece, he trains his manic stare at Mother Mary and her Son. The wings depict the work’s patrons. Thanks to their coats of arms, they can be identified as draper Peeter Scheyfve and his spouse, Agneese de Gramme, from Antwerp. Behind them are Saint Peter and Saint Agnes, their namesakes. |  |
