495. Devotion - 's-Hertogenbosch
Cruys-gebedt
's-Hertogenbosch, H. Gremmen, (18th c.?)
Broadsheet (visible area 37 x 26 cm) (toned)
Framed (not unframed). Good copy.
Extremely rare (unrecorded?) devotional broadsheet, printed by or for an otherwise unrecorded bookseller at ’s-Hertogenbosch. "De Vergulde Speelwagen" is a still existing house in the Hinthamerstraat, mentioned from 1606 onwards. In 1756 its is recorded as the "catoen- en boekwinkel van de Wed. Grimme" (Mosmans, Oude namen van huizen en straten in ’s-Hertogenbosch, 1907). Gremmen and Grimme was a typical Catholic family name in town and region.
At top: title, 12 rhyming Dutch verses (in roman type, in 2 col.) and a central woodcut with IHS emblem. Text of prayer printed in Gothic type in 2 col., separated by an ornamental type border. At bottom the imprint: "Tot s’Hertogenbosch | By Hermanus Gremmen, Boek- en Papier Verkooper in de Hintemetstraat / | In den Vergulde Speelwagen ||".
Ref. Not in STCN.
